I hope this helps our fellow teachers, new teachers, student teachers and eventually I hope this will help our future teachers .
Yesterday, we talked about the monthly school calendar, and in that calendar we will be having 190 class days for school year 2023-2024, and one of the things that I actually do is to give one word and it's meaning every class day. So if there are 190 class days, I will prepare 190 words which I actually share to my students after prayer and before the lesson proper. There is another alternative that we, teachers, can use. Because I remember way back 2009, 2010 and 2011, and maybe around 2012 also, I was a Grade 6 adviser. Now, I am a Grade 6 adviser but before I have been a Grade 4 adviser for about 10 years. Before I handled Grade 4 as my advisory students, I was handling Grade 6. And I remember way back, I don't use word for the day. What is used then, I am sharing to them aphorism. I checked my things and I'm thinking about using aphorism again. So, aside from word for the day, I can include aphorism since I am a firm believer that character is higher than intellect.
Probably sharing aphorism or wise sayings everyday can help the kids to, of course, be better persons. So, what is aphorism? I have here an example. This is coming from Master Cheng Yen, the founder of Tzu Chi Foundation. He gave this to us for free, I think in 2010. So Jing Si Aphorisms, there are a lot here. My former students, some are engineers already, some are psychometricians, nurses. Others are working overseas, maybe they can remember this. So before, I give one aphorism everyday before the lesson proper. Example of this, "Say good words, have good thoughts, do good deeds, and help make a world of difference". So this is free given by Tzu Chi Foundation. Thank you so much Tzu Chi Foundation.
I also have one here, I bought this from their store in Binondo (Manila). They have a store there. This is Jing Si Aphorism Cards. So its here, my name is here, Sir Elbert. I have this with me for more than 13 years already. Let's get one card. It's quite small, I'll just read it. "To forgive others is in fact being kind to ourselves". So I use these cards so that the kids can have some insights. I give a little explanation about this before going on to the subject lessons. So this is one tool a teacher can use. You can choose from aphorisms or wise sayings. I remember before, one of my idols in Dalahican Elementary School, Sir Abad, he uses proverbs and shares it everyday. So, as teachers, you can share to your students, proverbs, aphorisms or wise sayings everyday.
This is to ensure that we at least teach the kids, good conduct. Simply because we believe that attitude comes first and is more important that intelligence. I always include that in orientation that attitude first before knowledge. Character building of our kids is our top priority. Okay, so you can also prepare 190 items, if possible. As for me, I am thinking if aside from the word for the day, I will include aphorism which I used to do. That's it for now. Hope you learned something today and see you next vlog.
